5 TOP TIPS to improve your email deliverability

email deliverabilityWith retail sales projected to rake in up to $965 billion between November and January, a 4% increase from last year, now is the time to consider how your email marketing strategy can make the most of this.

With only 28% of all emails sent reaching the Inbox, it is vital to look at ways in which you can improve your deliverability rate.

This post details 5 Tops Tips that you should address today. But if you would like more information on the effects of poor deliverability you can download our FREE report ‘The Smarter Marketers’ Insight into Improved ROI via Increased Deliverability’ by clicking here.

1 – Verify your emails

Sending large volumes of emails to bad addresses can seriously damage your sender reputation and therefore stop your ISP delivering your emails.

The good news is that we now have a fully integrated verification solution, within arpReach.

This new upgrade will bring you:

  • The ability to verify your entire existing database from within arpReach
  • Real-time integrated email verification from your online forms and contact points.
  • Constant, automated, list monitoring
  • Batch import new or existing, email lists and get them verified instantly!

You can find a short video explaining the value of email verification here

2 – Sending from a free domain email address

Using a ‘from’ address that is a domain other than your own is a definate no! This will instantly perceive you as spam and damages your deliverability.

3 – Subject lines

Check your subject lines! Does it come across as SPAM?

Also ensure that you limit the use of characters such as £ or ! as this will often send emails straight to the spam folder.

4 – Use of images

Consider your choice of images for 2 reasons:

A – Using overly large images without any supporting text in your email can be a flag for SPAM filters (historically this is one way that SPAM mail could get through). There is currently no definite guidelines on text/image ratio, but general advise would be 60/40 text to image. However test and track and please do share your results!

B– Make sure that you consider the use of images and equally how does this view on mobile? Always ensure that you also have a text version for those who don’t accept HTML.

arpReach handles this with ease with a simple tick box ‘multipart’ which delivers both an HTML and text version of your email.

5 – Sending to unengaged recipients

Low open rates are a signal to ISPs that your recipients are not engaged with you, and your content is not relevant to them. This lack of engagement is just one of the factors that ISPs will use as part of your sender score and so could effect delivery of future emails. Worst case scenario they could even block your campaigns!

Therefore ensure you are monitoring your email campaigns and segmenting and targeting to get the best possible engagement.

You can find more information on how arpReach can help with targeting and segmenting here

We hope that this is a useful guide to improving your deliverability rate. There are other elements that could affect your email deliverability, however these Top 5 are ones to check today!

The good news is that arpReach users can now benefit from a fully integrated email verification solution, arpverify, check it out by clicking here.

arpReach version 1.5 is available

arpreach 1.5 released

What’s new in arpReach 1.5?

arpreach gold and standard boxesPHP requirement

The minimum PHP version requirement is 5.5.x with a recommendation you use PHP 5.6.x

New Features

The main new feature in the arpReach 1.5 release is … We’ve introduced integrated email verification and list scrubbing

We’ve been talking about the benefits of having a clean list and the improvements you’ll see to your Sender Score and delivery rates once you get rid of the dead email addresses for a month or so but now that we have integrated this capability using arpVerify directly into arpReach, it’s a game changer.

We’ve developed a fully integrated solution that

  • Checks every email that comes in to your system and
  • Allows you to check all of your existing email addresses, without having to export or import anything

There is no need to change any of your existing forms as the system will check every email for you.

All you need to do is decide what you want to do with the different types of verification results.

We’ve put up a series of training videos to help you and you can watch how to integrate arpReach with arpVerify here

It really is really simple and easy to do and will help you get more of your emails to more of your readers.

What are the new API v1 functions in 1.5

We’ve also added two new API functions that will make it even easier for developers to integrate with arpReach.  They are:

  • List Categories
  • List Responders

We are looking forward to working with even more developers to integrate with even more third-party tools and apps.  As always we welcome your feedback so we can improve the API even more.

New Look and Feel

arpReach 1.5 now has a new look and feel we think you’ll fall in love with as much as we have.

One of the improvement suggestions we received was to reduce the number of clicks it took to navigate around the control panel.  The new look navigation bar makes all of the important high level functions available in just one click.  We’ve also removed the delay so it’s super fast.

Bug Fixes

We’ve fixed quite a few more of the bugs that had been reported. There are too many to list here but you’ll be able to see the list in the arpReach change-log.

One of the more notable in this round of fixes is that we tracked down the issue that was causing CSV list imports to fail in Firefox (I can hear the cheer already).

Things to be aware of

Where this release fixes numerous issues including the sending of BCC notifications and attachments, old autoresponders will start sending them. Thanks to Sheri Gormley for pointing this out. Do check your autoresponders to make sure the right people are getting BCC’d and your attachment content to ensure it is still valid.

If you have customized your language files please be aware that we have added new files for the arpVerify integration and you will need to add these and change them as appropriate within your customization  (Thanks Tom for pointing this out).

If you need help please contact the arpReach support team and raise a ticket

Setting Up The Verification Rules

arpverify verification rules setuparpReach allows you to add individual contact records and details for your subscribers using forms, email sign-ups, using the API and even manually using the ‘Add a Contact’ function.  To protect your contact list and maximize your ability to reach more of your subscribers more of the time you need to verify that each email address is live and valid.

Using the arpVerify verification rules you can stop bad email addresses from being added to your lists.  Because you will not be sending broadcasts and autoresponder messages to non-existent email addresses your overall email deliverability rates will improve as your sender score increases.  The net effect is that a higher percentage of the people you send emails to will receive them which in turn leads to significantly higher returns and profits with each mailing.

In this video we show you how to set up your arpVerify verification rules within arpReach.

You can read more about “What are verification rules for” here

Setting up the arpVerify Import Monitor

arpverify import monitor setupMonitoring the emails you import in to your contact management or autoresponder systems and removing the bad email addresses will help to increase your email delivery rates by improving your sender score.  This is because one of the metrics used by email service companies like Gmail and Outlook looks at the percentage of attempts made to send messages to dead or non-existent email accounts.  The more attempts you make, the harder it is to get your email delivered.

In this video we show you how quick and easy it is to set up the arpVerify import monitor in arpReach.

You can read more in our FAQ’s here: “What is the Import Monitor

Setting Up The Contact List Monitor

Setup contact list monitor in arpreachIn this video we show you how to set up and configure the contact list monitor which allows you to check and verify the existing email addresses in your arpReach autoresponder installation automatically, without the need to export and re-upload files.

Email list verification is fully integrated and can be set to run monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or half yearly.  Removing bad email addresses will help improve your sender score which in turn helps to improve your overall email delivery rates.

How do I set up arpReach to use arpVerify?

From version 1.5, arpReach comes with the arpVerify integration module as standard.  All you need to do is set up an arpVerify account, get an API key from arpVerify, add it into the settings box in arpReach and click the enable button.  It is a very quick and simple process.  Once you have enabled the arpVerify module you can then configure it’s various options to suit your business needs.

What is the Recycle Bin?

The Recycle Bin is where contacts go when they are not considered “safe” to send to. It’s worth knowing that sometimes your contacts will only be in the Recycle Bin temporarily, while arpVerify is confirming whether they are safe. So for example, if you import a list of contacts, it will take an amount of time (from a few minutes, through to a number of hours if the list is quite large) to check everything on the list. Until the contacts have actually been verified, they will be held in the Recycle Bin. No autoresponse or broadcast email messages are sent to contacts that are in the Recycle Bin. Once the verification of each contact is complete, the contact is moved to your contact list or, according to the preferences that you have selected for the different verification results, it may stay in the Recycle Bin.

Can I still send emails to Contacts in the Recycle Bin?

Yes. If you see a contact in the Recycle Bin that you want to add to your Contact List, irrespective of the outcome of the verification, you can go to the Recycle Bin and select the Override check box next to that contact. The contact will now appear in your Contact List as Safe to Send, with a white check-mark over the green “safe” indicator to make it clear that the original verification outcome has been overridden. The contact will still be visible in the Recycle Bin (along with its Verification Result), so you can easily remove the override if you change your mind about sending to this contact later on.

What is the Contact List Monitor?

The Contact List Monitor keeps an eye on your existing list of contacts. Your contacts are re-verified at the frequency that you configure, to ensure that if anything changes your list remains in optimum health. For example, over time an email address may become inactive, or a domain may get blacklisted. By regularly re-verifying your contact list, these contacts can be moved to the Recycle Bin and your Sender Score will be maintained. The Contact Monitor is enabled independently, so make sure you have enabled it under the Contact Monitor tab if you want your contact list to stay clean.

Watch this video to learn: How do I set up the Contact List Monitor in arpReach

What is the Import Monitor?

The Import Monitor is used to perform a one-time verification on a list of contacts (this could be one contact or millions) that you want to add to your existing Contact List in arpReach. The rules you set for the Import Monitor are applied when you use “Import Contacts” or “Quick Add”. The Import Monitor is enabled independently, so make sure you have it enabled under the Import Monitor tab if you want to verify lists of contacts automatically as you import them to arpReach.

Watch this video to learn how to “Set up the arpVerify Import Monitor

What are the Verification Rules for?

Verification Rules are used to verify contacts that are added individually to your Contact List. The Verification Rules are applied (if enabled) when contacts are added via your arpReach subscription forms, automated email sign-ups, API calls, or manually within arpReach using “Add a Contact”

Watch this video to learn how to “Set up arpVerify verification rules” in arpReach

When will the Confirmation Email get sent?

The Confirmation Email is only relevant to contacts that have been added individually, and is only sent if configured under the specific input methods in the Verification Rules. You can use the Confirmation Email to minimise the chances of losing a new contact if a temporary glitch on their email server causes their email address to be marked as anything other than “Safe to send”. By sending an email asking the contact to verify their email themselves, they effectively confirm that they do really exist. If the contact subsequently clicks the confirmation link, the email address will be added to your Contact List and marked as “Safe to send”.

If a Contact is in the Recycle Bin, does it automatically get re-verified by the Contact List Monitor next time around?

No. For the odd occasion when a known “safe” email address fails the verification, this contact will need to be re-added to the contact list in order to be re-verified. In the rare circumstance when a large number of previously “safe” contacts on your contact list have been moved to the Recycle Bin, and you suspect that a technical error is the cause of this, please contact customer support.

If I have overridden a Contact in the Recycle Bin, does it automatically get re-verified by the Contact List Monitor?

Yes. As overridden contacts are on your Contact List, they will be verified each time the Contact List Monitor runs. If an overridden contact subsequently passes verification, that contact is removed from the Recycle Bin and appears on your Contact List as “Safe to send”.
